Democracy and Citizen Participation

Citizen participation is a cornerstone of democracy as it aims to ensure that citizens actively participate in the public decision-making process.
The democratic participation of Mozambicans cannot be limited to electing their representatives from time to time. This ALTERNACTIVA area of work is also a response to the increasing reduction of civic space and the intensification of authoritarianism in Mozambique. To prevent the fundamental rights of Mozambicans from being even more threatened than they already are, ALTERNACTIVA actively works to protect and defend the democratic freedoms of Mozambicans and fights so that everyone can express themselves without fear of reprisals and without censorship, in order to create a pluralistic Mozambique with the diversity of opinions necessary for a 21st century democracy.
